Civil/Structural Engineer – Design & Specification for Green Hydrogen Production Facility

Location: Prince George

Position Overview

The Civil/Structural Engineer will be responsible for the design and specification of all civil and structural elements of the green hydrogen production facility, including foundations, steel structures, and site grading. You will work closely with external fabricators, contractors, and engineering teams to ensure the designs are implemented accurately and meet all safety, regulatory, and operational requirements. The role will require a combination of design expertise, strong project coordination, and an ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues during the construction phase.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Specification:
Lead the design of fabricated structural steel systems, including supports, frames, platforms, and other load-bearing structures for the hydrogen production facility.

Design foundations for equipment, tanks, and buildings, ensuring structural integrity and compliance with local building codes and environmental considerations.

Prepare detailed structural calculations, drawings, and specifications for fabrication, ensuring compliance with relevant standards (e.g., AISC, CSA, ASCE).

Design and specify site grading, drainage systems, roads, and other civil works required for the facility’s construction.

Specify materials, including structural steel grades, concrete, and foundation materials, ensuring durability and compliance with project requirements.

Collaboration and Coordination:
Work closely with external fabricators and contractors to ensure the accuracy and constructability of structural designs.

Coordinate with external engineering teams, including mechanical, electrical, and process engineers, to ensure the integration of civil and structural designs with other plant systems.

Ensure that construction activities align with approved designs, schedules, and budgets.

Provide technical support to contractors during the construction phase, answering design-related questions and resolving any issues that arise on-site.

Collaborate with project managers and contractors to refine construction sequencing, ensuring efficient workflows and minimizing downtime.

Construction Phase Support:
Conduct site inspections and quality control checks to verify that all structural elements are being built according to design specifications.

Review contractor submissions, including shop drawings and material submittals, ensuring compliance with project specifications and codes.

Oversee the installation of structural steel and foundation works, ensuring that all safety and quality standards are maintained.

Troubleshoot and provide solutions for any construction-related issues, including deviations from plans or unexpected site conditions.

Review and approve as-built drawings and any design modifications made during construction.

Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain and update design documentation, ensuring that all changes, modifications, and approvals are well-documented.

Prepare technical reports for management, detailing progress, challenges, and solutions during the construction phase.

Ensure that all structural designs and work comply with local building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
